Introduction to SMSTS Course

This SMSTS 5 day course is designed for site managers, agents and persons who are, or are about to be, responsible for site management activities which involve planning and organising work on construction sites.

The SMSTS training course covers all relevant legislation and other aspects which affect safe working in the building, construction and civil engineering. It highlights the need for risk assessment in the workplace, how to promote a positive health and safety culture in the workplace. Its offered as part of the CITB training courses or Site Safety Plus Courses.

Aims and Objectives of SMSTS Training

To help site managers and supervisors to:

  • manage health and safety on site in accordance with current legal provisions, and within the context of their own role in thw workplace
  • develop an understanding of yourresponsibilities for site health, safety and welfare
  • recognise the benefits of a safe site, and how this is achieved.

At the end of the period of training, delegates will be aware of, and able to:

  • implement health, safety, welfare and environmental legislation which affects them during their daily work
  • implement new health and safety guidance within the workplace
  • be aware of their duties and responsibilities with regards to health, safety, welfare and the environment.
Assessment and Certification

The method of SMSTS assessment will be by exercises, a case study and an end of course examination.

SMSTS Training Certificates are valid for 5 years. However, due to continuing changes in legislation and best practice, it is recommended that SMSTS refresher courses are undertaken within 3 years of completing the original SMSTS training course.

Course Attendance

Delegates are required to attend all sessions, since without full attendance the Construction Site Manager’s Safety Certificate will not be awarded. Delegates must attend the days in order, in accordance with the course programme, to achieve the necessary criteria to qualify for the certificate.
